Kathleen Johnson - Singer, Hammered Dulcimer Player, Story Teller

As a teenager, while everyone else pinned up Rick Springfield posters, I cosseted a picture of Liam Clancy.   I attended the Eastman School of Music where I lost a piece of my heart to Handel, Mendelssohn, and Bach.  Yet I was happiest when I snagged tickets to see Tommy Makem.  After graduation, I discovered Renaissance Fairs and the joys of performing for intimate audiences.

My music has been described as eclectic.  I hail from a long line of North Atlantic coast dwellers who have deeply personal and riveting histories clearly written in song.  Their voices call to me.  The repertoire flows from my ancestry.  It spans the Burgundy monasteries of 13th century France, the Highland battles of 15th century Scotland, the English immigrants of 17th century America, the Loyalists of 19th century Nova Scotia, and into New York during the great Irish music revival of the 20th century.  This music is in my blood; it resonates with resilience, insight and wisdom.  I hope my work honors those earlier voices and brings joy to you.
